Clean Cruising on the Rhine River
May 22 2013
First microturbines aboard European dual-fuel ship. For the first time in marine history, two Capstone C30 liquid natural gas (LNG) MicroTurbines® were installed on the MTS Argonon, a dual fuel Type-C Tanker, to cut greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs. While the 110-meter (330-foot) vessel traverses the Rhine River stopping in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland, the microturbines operate in an N+1 setting and serve as the main power supply onboard. The combined cooling, heating, and power system ensures high fuel efficiency and runs on an environmentally healthy mixture of 80% natural gas and 20% diesel, making the tanker compliant with strict Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine regulations without additional exhaust aftertreatment.
