Capstone #ShiftToGreen Initiative

The need to shift to green has never been more evident than it is today. In fact, there is a strong argument to be made for a green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The global pandemic has provided overwhelming evidence in showcasing the impact mankind has had on the planet. As a result of the worldwide shutdowns in Venice, Italy, the water in the canals were almost crystal clear, and in Krakow, Poland, people enjoyed the amazing view of the Trata mountains, which were no longer been obscured by smog.

This movement to lower emissions and promote higher efficiency energy solutions should not be a political issue that divides us, but a social issue that unites us all to improve the environment while simultaneously saving money and creating more green jobs.

President and Chief Executive Officer

#ShiftToGreen to Save Money and the Environment

Dal-Tile Corporation a Subsidiary of Mohawk — Dickson, Tennessee

As the largest manufacturer of ceramic and natural stone products in North America, Dal-Tile Corporation is focused on sustainable business operations that reduce their impact on the environment. Given the scale and environmental impact of its plant operations, the company established a series of sustainability goals that include lowering greenhouse gas emissions and increasing energy efficiency. To help achieve the ambitious target, Dal-Tile, a subsidiary of Mohawk Industries installed five Capstone C1000 Signature Series microturbines to enhance the overall energy efficiency at their 1.2 million-square-foot Dal-Tile plant. Clean waste heat from the microturbine exhaust is used in an industrial drying process, thereby increasing overall efficiency to over 90%. The microturbines provide not only operational savings with on-site power generation but also provide critical emergency backup in the event of a power outage.

Ambev Cervejeria — Guarulhos, Brazil

Multiple biogas-fueled Capstone C65, C200R, C200S microturbines generate clean and reliable on-site power for brewery giant Ambev at four manufacturing plants in Brazil. The systems capture biogas and use it to power a microturbine that generates energy for the factory and its manufacturing processes. Together, these four breweries produce 449,000 kWh of energy every month, enough to supply about 2,800 households. Beyond meeting environmental goals, the systems reduce Ambev’s dependency on the power grid. As a result, energy costs are lower, and the plants experience improved power reliability, which also helps maintain product quality and consistency.
